Interfaith Shabbat

On the Friday night Shabbat Service of 28th November 2014, Ruislip Synagogue held its Annual Interfaith Shabbat Service, attended by 75 people. We were honoured this year by the presence of the Deputy Mayor, Councillor George Cooper and the Deputy Mayoress Judith Cooper, plus the Borough Commander Detective Chief Superintendent Nick Downing. The visitors in the congregation, joining our own members, were Christian, Catholic, Muslim and representatives of other faiths.

The Service and the meaning of certain parts of it proved to be of great interest to all our guests and were understood by all, thanks to the explanations given by Rabbi Coten.

The Ark was opened and the Prayer for the Royal Family was recited, acknowledging that all faiths share common responsibilities in the UK.

His Worship the Deputy Mayor together with The Borough Commander acknowledged how much they had enjoyed the evening. It was the first time that either had been to an Orthodox Synagogue.

A Kiddush followed the Service which was much appreciated by all.

At the conclusion of the Service a vote of thanks was extended to all our guests by Ronnie Cotsen.

Some of our members are to visit other faiths in the near future to further the understanding of each others’ religion.
